Lightest mobile document scanner at 260g — USB-powered for occasional scanning anywhere
Brother DS-640: The lightest document scanner in a category of light scanners
At 260g and $75, the DS-640 is the entry-level option for portable USB-powered scanning. It does less than the Epson ES-50 — slower at 16ppm, no wireless, fewer software features — but costs less and weighs less.
What works
260g is the lightest specification in the category. Scanning a page requires inserting it in the slot, pressing scan in the included software, and receiving the digital file. The workflow is simple enough that anyone can use it without reading a manual.
USB bus-powered operation — one USB cable, no adapter, no outlet. Battery life is irrelevant because it draws from the connected laptop.
$75 is the entry price for a standalone scanner with any pretense at quality. If you scan the occasional contract, receipt, or ID document, this is sufficient.
What doesn't
16ppm is the slowest in the category — noticeably slower than the ES-50's 22ppm for multi-page documents. No wireless, no ADF, no advanced software. If you scan regularly or in any volume, the additional investment in the ES-50 or Canon R10 is worth it.
Who should buy this
The traveler or remote worker who needs a scanner for occasional use and is choosing between the DS-640 and a phone camera. The hardware produces cleaner, more consistent results than phone scanning for contracts, forms, and legal documents.
Who should look elsewhere
Better speed and software: Epson ES-50 ($90). Duplex ADF in portable form: Canon R10 ($120). Wireless and ADF: Brother ADS-1700W ($180). High-volume use: Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1300 ($350).
